Hazel or Willow Hurdles-Which lasts longer?
A key question often naturally asked is which is more durable-Hazel or Willow Hurdles? You would haver thought there was a multitude of answers and factors to consider but it’s oh so simple…whichever one gets well looked after and cared for. And this would mean regular annual treatment of linseed oil and turps (brushed or sprayed on) which can be easily done by the customer or I could come in and do it for you. Without this, just as all other natural items outside then it will start to break down so much quicker. So with annual treatment the record I have had for a willow hurdle is 14 years, without treatment 6/7 years. And despite hazel being thicker it’s surprisingly the same for both.
The only other issue to consider with a hurdle whether its woven in situ or a panel is to make sure its secure over the years and that nothing is coming in regular contact with the hurdle. Most often this is usually branches from shrubs or trees that have grown up around the hurdle over the years and once the wind starts knocking stems/branches into the hurdle thats when damage is likely to occur. And finally just to check that the posts supporting the hurdle are not moving and got inherent strength-any major movement in the hurdle after years 7/8 will mean it might break down quicker.
So a few smoke things which would easily double the life span of your hurdle without costing a lot of time or money! For any more information or questions do get in contact on the phone or email.
