The beauty with the work I do is that I get to work in some fabulous places and Croyde Bay was definitely high in the list. The largest project to date-over 60m of hazel hurdles woven in situ at 2m high to shield two area of the garden from the neighboring sea winds. Hazel hurdles are perfect in this scenario as the wind filters through the hurdle rather than hitting it full on like a conventional fence so there is less pressure on the fence and the plants are more sheltered as well.
Over 2000 hazel rods were used, all prepped and split in the woodland they were cut in and then transported to site. All the fences with split hazel start and finish with 4” square oak posts which are buried in the ground and the weave starts from there. The rest of the fence, including the uprights are all hazel and only once the fence is all woven do I then go along and install oak posts behind the fence and wire it together.
The weaving on site was close to ten days and prior to that it was good 4-5 weeks in the woods coppicing and gathering all the rods as well as all the splitting and pointing.Extremely chuffed to weave my first Padel Court fence here as well here!
Over 2000 rods split and woven, just over 6' 6" high.
Choosing the right rod for each layer is crucial to keep the uprights nice and straight.
Sunset through a tree in a garden, with shadows cast on gravel pathway and green grass, overlooking neighboring houses and a hill.
Beginning the weave on the longest section-all split hazel.
Finishing off the top section at 2m high was a little challenging.
