I have had the great pleasure with working with Victoria on several projects now and this was by far the most extensive and transformative. From 4” square Oak framed hurdles through to Moon Gates and a lovely continuous hazel hurdle that reflected hurdles of bygone years.
The hurdles and moon gates were used to provide boundaries and frame different areas of the garden. The Moon Gate was something new to do and having made numerous Hazel Rose Arches over the years I used similar techniques to create two 7’ diameter portals! They are now festooned with lights for a beautiful nighttime feature too.
The Oak framed hurdles were a little tricky too handle with the weight but once installed alongside a refurbished pool and lit at night were a joy to do. Once Victoria had finished her planting the colours of the plants really stood out against the browns of the Oak and Hazel panels. Installed with 4” Oak posts to give it a fluid feeling, these can be re woven once the Hazel gives up its strength in 9/10 years.
The final piece in the garden was a continuous Hazel hurdle between a formal part of the garden and area that was going to become a wild meadow. To be able to glimpse the wild meadow a series of ‘windows’ were made in the hurdle both horizontally as well as diagonally. This was a similar feature to hurdles used during Lambing season (albeit much lower than in this one) so that lambs could reach through and eat the fresh grass on the other side off the hurdle. The Ewes would not have been able to get there heads through as the gap between the uprights would not have been big enough.

Hazel Hurdle woven in situ with a series of 'windows' to provide glimpses of the wild flower meadow beyond.
Oak Framed hurdles 4" square. These can be rewoven once the Hazel has given out. Perfect backdrop for the flower bed and a little privacy.

Hazel Hurdle-the 'windows' can be worked into the hurdle in lots of ways to provide viewing points.
The Moon Gate prior to installation, woven in a very similar way to how I make the Rose arches.
